There is an old bookshop near my office that I visit every few weeks. It sells secondhand books, arranged in a system that only the owner fully understands.

The owner is a man in his sixties called Albert. He has worked there for thirty years and claims to have read most of the stock. He probably has.

I always start in the same section and then wander. The pleasure is in not knowing what you will find. Last month I found a book about the history of salt. A month before that, a collection of letters written by a nineteenth-century explorer.

Albert always notices what I have chosen and comments on it. Sometimes he makes a recommendation. His recommendations are always good.

The shop smells of old paper and something warm and dusty. It is very quiet. The only sounds are the occasional bell above the door and the soft noise of pages turning.

In a city full of noise and speed, this small shop feels like a different kind of place. I always leave feeling calmer than when I arrived.
