When I was seventeen, I decided I wanted to learn to drive. My parents thought it was a good idea, so they paid for driving lessons as a birthday present.

My instructor was called Mr. Harris. He was a patient man with a calm voice. This was important, because I was very nervous at first. The first time I sat in the driver's seat, my hands were shaking.

The first lessons were in a quiet car park. I practised starting the car, moving forward, stopping, and turning. It sounds simple, but it was harder than I expected. I stalled the engine many times.

After a few weeks, Mr. Harris took me onto the real roads. This was much more frightening. There were other cars, traffic lights, and roundabouts. I made a lot of mistakes. Once, I went the wrong way around a roundabout. Mr. Harris stayed calm and told me what to do.

Gradually, I became more confident. I practised every week. After six months, Mr. Harris said I was ready for the test.

I passed on my second attempt. The first time, I made too many small errors. The second time, I was more relaxed and everything went well.

Getting my driving licence was one of the best feelings I can remember. It gave me a new kind of freedom.

Dopo qualche settimana, Mr. Harris mi portò sulle strade vere. Questo era molto più spaventoso. C'erano altre auto, semafori e rotatorie.
