I have got into the habit of taking a walk every evening after dinner. I started three months ago when I was feeling sluggish and wanted a simple way to feel better.

The walk takes about thirty-five minutes. The route goes around the park, down a tree-lined street, past a small church, and home.

I do not listen to anything while I walk. No music, no podcast. Just the sounds of the evening: traffic, birds, occasional voices, the wind.

After the first week, I noticed that I was sleeping better. After the second week, I noticed that my evenings felt longer and more satisfying. I was not just watching television from dinner until bedtime.

Now the walk is part of my day in a way that feels important. If I miss it, I feel slightly off.

I also notice more about the neighbourhood than I did before. The same streets, walked slowly every day, reveal things you miss at speed. A plaque on a wall. A garden that changes with the seasons. A cat that is always in the same window.
