My grandmother makes bread every week. She has done it all her life. She says bread from the shop is never as good as homemade bread.

The process takes several hours. First, she mixes flour, water, yeast, and salt in a big bowl. She kneads the dough for ten minutes. Kneading means pushing and folding the dough with your hands.

Then the dough rests for an hour and doubles in size. This is called proving. The yeast makes bubbles of gas which makes the bread rise.

After proving, she shapes the dough into loaves and puts them in tins. They rest for another thirty minutes.

Finally, she bakes them in a hot oven for thirty-five minutes. The smell fills the whole house.

When the bread comes out, it has a golden brown crust. She taps the bottom and it makes a hollow sound. That means it is ready. Nothing tastes better than warm homemade bread with butter.
