Last month, I needed to have a difficult conversation with a colleague. He had been arriving late to work repeatedly and it was affecting the rest of the team.

I spent several days preparing what I wanted to say. I wanted to be honest but not aggressive. I wanted to raise the problem without making him feel attacked.

I asked to speak with him privately over coffee. I described what I had observed and explained the impact it was having. I tried to speak in terms of facts rather than feelings.

He was defensive at first. He gave several explanations. I listened without interrupting.

Then something shifted. He paused and said: "You are right. I have been struggling with some things at home. I should have been more professional about it."

We talked for another twenty minutes. He thanked me for speaking to him directly rather than going to the manager.

The situation improved after that. I learned that most difficult conversations are less frightening than you expect, and more productive than you hope.

Ho passato diversi giorni a preparare cosa dire.

All'inizio era sulla difensiva. Ha dato diverse spiegazioni. Ho ascoltato senza interrompere.

Sto affrontando alcune difficoltà a casa.
