Last Tuesday, I got a phone call from my old school friend Paulo. We had not spoken for almost two years.
He called out of the blue while I was making dinner. His voice sounded exactly the same as I remembered it, which was strange and comforting at the same time.
He was calling to say he would be passing through our town next month on a work trip. He asked if we could meet for coffee. Of course I said yes immediately.
We talked on the phone for an hour. We caught up on everything. He had got married the previous year and was expecting his first child in the spring. He had changed jobs and seemed very content.
I told him about my life. My new flat, my job, my plans.
When we finally said goodbye, I sat back down at the table and smiled to myself. Good friendships are remarkable things. Two years of silence, and then ten minutes on the phone and it feels as if no time has passed at all.
