Six months ago, I joined a local running club. I had been running alone for a year and wanted more structure and company.
The club meets three times a week: Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and Sunday mornings. There are about thirty members. The pace varies and there are different groups depending on ability.
I started in the slower group. The first few sessions were humbling. Even at a gentle pace, I found the distance tiring. But the people around me were encouraging rather than competitive.
Running in a group is different from running alone. You have company, you have accountability, and you tend to push yourself a little more. Conversation makes the miles pass faster.
By month three, I moved up to the intermediate group. Last month, I completed my first ten-kilometre race. It was difficult but I finished and my time was better than I expected.
The coach told me I had a good stride. That small compliment stayed with me for days.
