The first snow of winter came last Tuesday. I woke up and looked out of the window and the street was white.
Snow always changes the atmosphere of a city. The usual sounds are muffled. The light is different, brighter and softer at the same time. People move more carefully on the pavements.
I made coffee and stood at the window for ten minutes before getting ready. There is something about the first snow of the year that feels like a small event worth marking.
On the way to work, the park was very beautiful. The branches of the trees held thin lines of white. A few children were there already, despite the early hour, making footprints in the untouched snow.
At work, people talked about the snow more than they talked about anything else. It was the kind of minor collective experience that makes strangers friendly.
The snow lasted two days before turning grey and soft. But those two days were very good.
