It was a Friday evening in November, and Helen was looking forward to a quiet night at home. She had a long week at work and all she wanted was a hot meal, a glass of wine, and an early night.
She was in the middle of cooking when the doorbell rang. She was not expecting anyone. She wiped her hands on a cloth and went to the door.
Standing on the doorstep, soaking wet from the rain, was her old university friend Daniel. She had not seen him for almost four years. He was holding a small bag and looking slightly embarrassed.
"I know I should have called," he said. "I was passing through and I just thought... well, I wasn't sure you'd still live here."
Helen laughed despite herself and opened the door wide. "Come in, you're absolutely soaked. Have you eaten?"
He had not. She set another place at the table and opened another bottle of wine. Over dinner, they caught up on four years of news. Daniel had been working abroad and had recently come back to England without a clear plan. He seemed uncertain about his future, which was unusual for someone who had always seemed so confident.
They talked until midnight. By the end of the evening, Helen had offered him the spare room for a few days while he sorted things out.
Walking to bed, she smiled to herself. A quiet night, she thought, sometimes turns into something much better.
