The Language of Food

When people from different cultures share a meal, something interesting happens. The table becomes a place where communication goes beyond words.

I noticed this for the first time at a dinner party where the guests spoke five different languages between them. Verbal conversation was halting and sometimes impossible. But the food moved freely around the table. People pointed, gestured, smiled, and offered more to each other.

Food carries information that language cannot always hold. A dish tells you where someone comes from, what their childhood smelled like, what they consider nourishing. When someone cooks for you, they are telling you something about themselves.

This is perhaps why sharing food with strangers so often produces a particular kind of warmth, even without shared language.

I have thought about this at every interesting meal since. A bowl of soup, passed across a table, can be a very complete form of communication.
