I grew up speaking two languages. At home, my parents spoke Portuguese. At school and with friends, I spoke English. For many years, these two worlds were separate.
As a child, I did not think much about it. Switching between languages felt as natural as changing clothes for different occasions.
It was only when I left home for university that I began to understand what I had been given. Surrounded by people who spoke only English, I realised that my Portuguese was a private channel to a part of myself that was not accessible in translation.
The way you express certain feelings, the jokes that only work in one language, the words that have no exact equivalent in the other: these things had shaped me without my noticing.
I now speak Portuguese regularly on video calls with my parents and cousins. I have also met my partner''s family, who speak neither of my languages. We manage, with some effort.
I am teaching my own children Portuguese. They find it strange at first. I think they will one day find it valuable.
