Once a year, the city museum opens after dark for a special evening event. The permanent collection is displayed by candlelight, and a small jazz group plays in the main hall.
I went for the first time this year with a friend who had been several times before. She said it was one of the best things in the city and I had been foolish to miss it.
She was right. The museum at night was a completely different experience from the museum in daylight. The lighting changed how the paintings looked. Colours that seemed muted in the afternoon became vivid. Shadows deepened the texture of sculptures.
There were fewer people than usual, and the ones who were there tended to move more slowly and quietly. The jazz was audible everywhere, creating a mood that a museum in normal hours never has.
We spent two hours there and only covered two rooms properly. There is something to be said for looking carefully at a few things rather than moving quickly past many.
We have already agreed to go again next year.
