For nearly thirty years, Henry Wallace had kept the lighthouse on the rocky island of Saint Mary. It was a lonely life, far from the noise and comfort of the mainland, but it was the only life he had ever truly wanted. Every evening, as the sun sank into the sea, he climbed the narrow spiral staircase to light the great lamp that guided ships safely past the dangerous rocks below.

The island was small, barely a kilometre across, and Henry knew every inch of it. He had grown accustomed to the constant company of the wind and the waves, and to the cries of the seabirds that nested on the cliffs. Visitors were rare. A supply boat came once a month, weather permitting, bringing food, fuel, and the occasional letter. Apart from that, Henry was entirely alone.

Some people might have found such isolation unbearable, but Henry had never seen it that way. He had his books, his garden of hardy vegetables, and the endless drama of the sea, which was never the same from one hour to the next. He often said, to anyone who would listen, that he had the finest view in the world.

One stormy November night, however, his peaceful routine was suddenly interrupted. The wind had been building all day, and by midnight it had become a full gale. Rain lashed against the windows, and the whole tower seemed to tremble with each crashing wave. Then, through the chaos, Henry heard a sound that made his blood run cold: the desperate cry of a ship's horn, far too close to the rocks.

Without hesitation, he grabbed his coat and rushed outside into the storm. Through his telescope, he could just make out a small fishing boat being thrown helplessly towards the cliffs. The crew had clearly lost control, and within minutes the vessel would be destroyed.

Henry acted quickly. He raced down to the tiny harbour, launched his own small boat, and rowed out into the furious sea. It was an act of extraordinary courage, and one that could easily have cost him his life. Twice the waves nearly capsized him, but somehow he managed to reach the stranded fishermen and guide them back to safety.

By morning, the storm had passed, and the sea was calm once more, as if nothing had happened. The grateful fishermen could not stop thanking him, but Henry simply shrugged and offered them a hot cup of tea.

When a journalist later asked him why he had risked everything for strangers, the old keeper looked genuinely puzzled by the question. "It is what the light is for," he said quietly. "To bring people home. I am only doing my job.
