The Interview

Clara had been preparing for this interview for weeks. The position, junior editor at a respected publishing house, was exactly the kind of job she had dreamed of since university. She had researched the company thoroughly, rehearsed her answers, and chosen her outfit with great care. And yet, as she sat in the waiting room, she could feel her confidence slowly draining away.

The office was impressive, perhaps deliberately so. The walls were lined with awards and photographs of famous authors, and the receptionist spoke in the hushed, efficient tone of someone who took her work very seriously. Clara glanced at the other candidates and immediately began to compare herself unfavourably to them. They all seemed older, more experienced, and far more relaxed than she felt.

When her name was finally called, her heart was pounding. She was shown into a bright meeting room, where three people were waiting for her behind a long table. They introduced themselves politely, but their faces gave nothing away. For the first few minutes, the questions were predictable, and Clara answered them smoothly. Then came the question she had not anticipated.

"Tell us," said the woman in the centre, leaning forward slightly, "about a time when you failed. And, more importantly, what you learned from it."

Clara hesitated. Her instinct was to invent something safe and impressive, a failure that was not really a failure at all. But something in the woman's expression made her change her mind. Instead, she decided to be honest.

She told them about a magazine she had tried to launch at university, which had collapsed after only three issues. She described the mistakes she had made, the money she had wasted, and the embarrassment she had felt. But she also explained what the experience had taught her about planning, teamwork, and the importance of listening to others.

When she finished, there was a brief silence. Clara was certain she had ruined her chances. She had admitted to a genuine failure, and surely that was the last thing they wanted to hear.

To her surprise, however, the panel seemed pleased. The woman in the centre smiled for the first time. "Thank you," she said. "That was refreshingly honest. Too many people pretend they have never made a mistake. We are far more interested in people who can learn from theirs."

Two weeks later, Clara received the phone call she had been hoping for. She had got the job. As she put down the phone, she reflected on the lesson she had learned that day: sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is simply to tell the truth, even when it feels like a risk.
