The philosopher Simone Weil wrote that attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity. She was writing about the attention we give to another person when they are suffering: not the urge to fix, to offer solutions, or to redirect the conversation, but simply to be present to someone else''s reality.
This kind of attention is genuinely rare. Most of what passes for listening is actually waiting: waiting for a pause in which to speak, waiting for a point at which to identify with what has been said, waiting for a place to offer advice.
Real attention requires the suspension of the self. You put down what you intended to say. You stop evaluating. You follow, rather than direct, the movement of the other person''s thought.
Weil believed this was a form of love. I think she was right. And I think the difficulty of it explains a great deal about human loneliness: not the absence of company, but the scarcity of genuine attention.
We are surrounded by people and by communication. What many of us lack is someone who will really listen.
