Doubt is not the enemy of knowledge. It is its precondition. This claim, which sounds paradoxical, is the founding insight of modern scientific method and, before that, of Cartesian philosophy. Descartes' method of systematic doubt was not a form of scepticism about the possibility of knowledge. It was a device for identifying what could withstand scrutiny — what was left standing after everything uncertain had been set aside. The doubt was in service of something more secure than unexamined certainty.

In practice, doubt is uncomfortable and socially costly. The person who says "I'm not sure" in a context where confidence is expected appears less competent than the person who says something with conviction, even if the conviction is unwarranted. The institutions that reward certainty and punish hesitation — certain kinds of corporate and political culture, adversarial legal systems, some forms of academic debate — systematically produce overconfident assertions, because that is what they select for.

The philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce proposed that the proper home of doubt is not the individual mind but the community of inquiry — the collective process of investigation in which claims are tested, challenged, and revised over time. Individual doubt is often unproductive: the person who doubts everything reaches no conclusions. But institutionalised doubt — the peer review system, the adversarial structure of legal argument, the norm of reproducibility in science — is the mechanism by which error is identified and corrected.

What this suggests is that the question is not whether to doubt, but how to institutionalise doubt productively. The answer involves not paralysis but process: creating structures in which claims are routinely challenged, in which the burden of proof is calibrated to the significance of the claim, and in which the social costs of uncertainty are reduced enough that people are willing to say what they actually think rather than what is expected of them.

The discipline of doubt, properly understood, is not a disposition of the individual mind but a feature of the social structures within which minds operate. Getting those structures right is among the more important intellectual challenges available.
