THE INCIDENT

At around five o'clock in the afternoon, a column of smoke began to rise from the twenty-fifth floor of one of Madrid's Four Towers: the Torre Moeve, formerly Cepsa. An explosion in a technical room caused the dramatic incident in Spain's second-tallest skyscraper, which has forty storeys and rises two hundred and forty-eight metres high.

THE EVACUATION

Hundreds of workers crowded into the Castellana boulevard area, while a large emergency response team rushed to the scene to control the flames. Five people were trapped in different safety zones inside the building, but were evacuated unharmed, according to Rubén Gallego, spokesperson for the Madrid Fire Department.

THE CASUALTIES

Emergency teams from Summa-Civil Protection treated two workers for mild smoke inhalation. Both were discharged on site. The source of the fire was brought under control in less than two hours, but the building was evacuated as a precaution.

A NEIGHBOURHOOD ON ALERT

Although the cause of the fire remains unknown, authorities responded swiftly. Three employees took shelter on the thirty-sixth floor, another on the twenty-seventh, and a fifth on the thirteenth — all in continuous contact with rescue teams.

KEY VOCABULARY

Skyscraper — a very tall building. To evacuate — to remove people from a place. Smoke inhalation — accidentally breathing in smoke. Emergency response — coordinated rescue services. To discharge — to release someone from medical care.
