Colombia Elects a Far-Right President

Colombia has elected a new president from the far right of the political spectrum, in a result that marks a significant reversal of the country's recent political direction. The incoming president's campaign focused on security, opposition to the existing peace agreements with armed groups, and a sharp rejection of the economic and social policies pursued under his predecessor, Gustavo Petro.

Gustavo Petro, Colombia's first left-wing president, had pursued an ambitious agenda of social reform, environmental policy and a policy of "total peace" that sought to negotiate with multiple armed groups simultaneously. Critics argued that the approach had failed to bring security to many regions of the country, and that economic management had fallen short of expectations.

The new government is expected to take a much tougher line on armed groups, potentially abandoning or significantly revising the existing negotiation processes. Foreign policy may also shift, as the incoming president has expressed a more sceptical view of regional alliances associated with the left, including those with Venezuela and Cuba.
