AN UNPRECEDENTED MOMENT

In a remarkable development, hundreds of residents of Gaza were seen publicly protesting against Hamas for the first time in more than a year. Demonstrators carried signs reading "God willing, Hamas out" and "We are not pawns." The protests were planned weeks in advance, according to residents who spoke to journalists, and represent a significant shift in the public mood within the strip.

THE CONTEXT

Gaza has been under devastating military pressure since Hamas's October 7th 2023 attack on Israel and the subsequent Israeli military campaign. The prolonged conflict has resulted in enormous civilian suffering, with widespread destruction of infrastructure, severe shortages of food, medicine and clean water, and massive displacement of the population. For many Gazans, the anger is no longer directed only at Israel but increasingly at Hamas itself, which they hold responsible for the decisions that led to their current situation.

HAMAS REACTS

Hamas operatives were deployed in an attempt to deter and stop the protests before they took place. Despite this, the demonstrations went ahead, suggesting that the level of public frustration has reached a point where fear of the group is no longer sufficient to prevent open dissent.

WHAT IT COULD MEAN

Political analysts have described the protests as potentially significant, though they caution against over-interpreting a single event. If public discontent with Hamas continues to grow within Gaza, it could eventually reshape the political landscape of the strip and affect the prospects for any future negotiations over its governance.
