US No Longer Opposes Africa's Antigay Laws

The Trump administration has formally signalled that the United States will no longer publicly oppose anti-homosexuality legislation passed by African governments. The shift, reported by major American news outlets, represents a significant departure from US foreign policy under previous administrations, both Democratic and Republican.

Many African countries have introduced harsh anti-gay laws. Uganda passed a law in 2023 that imposes the death penalty in cases of so-called "aggravated homosexuality". Other countries — Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria — have similar but less extreme laws. For years, the United States condemned these laws and tied parts of its development aid to human rights conditions.

Under the Trump administration, the State Department has been instructed not to comment on the internal legislation of African partners, particularly in matters relating to gender identity or sexual orientation. The Pentagon has also reportedly suspended programmes aimed at supporting LGBT activists in regions where they are at risk.

Human rights organisations have strongly criticised the change. Amnesty International described the move as "a betrayal of vulnerable people across Africa". European governments, by contrast, have so far maintained their public criticism of anti-gay laws in the region, leaving a visible gap between Washington and Brussels.

Reversal — change in the opposite direction. To oppose — to be against something. Aggravated — made more serious. Development aid — financial help given to poorer countries. Betrayal — act of breaking trust. Vulnerable — easily harmed.
