A SUMMER OF EXTREMES

France has just recorded its hottest day of the year, with the national thermal average across thirty weather stations hitting an unprecedented value. In Paris, residents sought refuge in the shade and in public fountains, as the temperature climbed past forty degrees Celsius and the national index for severe heat events crept up to a new high.

THE BIGGER PATTERN

The heat is part of a wider European trend. Successive summers across the continent have produced record after record, particularly in cities ill-equipped for prolonged hot weather. Paris, like much of northern Europe, was built on the assumption of mild summers. Its dense housing, narrow streets, and limited green spaces make it especially vulnerable to extreme heat.

THE HUMAN COST

Health authorities have issued warnings about the elderly, young children, and those with chronic conditions. Hospitals in several regions reported a sharp increase in admissions linked to dehydration and heatstroke. Public swimming pools and cooled "respite centres" have been opened in major cities to give residents a place to escape the heat.

A STRUCTURAL CHALLENGE

Climate scientists have long predicted that climate change would push European summers towards Mediterranean-style intensity, even in countries traditionally accustomed to cooler weather. The challenge for cities like Paris is now structural: how to retrofit historic urban centres for a climate they were never designed to face.

KEY VOCABULARY

Heatwave — period of unusually hot weather. Heatstroke — serious medical condition caused by overheating. Vulnerable — likely to be harmed. To retrofit — to add new technology to an older system or building. Mild — moderate, not extreme. Unprecedented — never seen before.

QUESTION

What practical changes should European cities make to adapt to hotter summers? Who is most affected by extreme heat, and why?
