A New Interstellar Object: Scientists Scan 3I/ATLAS for Alien Signals

Astronomers have detected a new interstellar visitor passing through our solar system — an object designated 3I/ATLAS, the third known interstellar object ever observed travelling through our cosmic neighbourhood. Unlike the first two — ʻOumuamua (2017) and Borisov (2019) — 3I/ATLAS was detected early enough for scientists to organise coordinated observation campaigns across multiple telescopes before the object moves out of range.

In a move that captures the imagination, radio astronomers have trained their instruments on 3I/ATLAS to search for artificial radio signals that might indicate a technological origin. The probability of such a discovery is considered extremely low, but the scientific community has learned from the controversy surrounding ʻOumuamua — whose unusual acceleration characteristics puzzled scientists for years — that interstellar objects deserve the most thorough investigation possible before they disappear beyond reach.

Every interstellar object that passes through our solar system is a sample from another star system, an ambassador from the wider galaxy.
