A selloff in global technology stocks intensified on Tuesday, leaving investors worried about higher interest rates, stretched valuations and the prospect that the billions of dollars in artificial-intelligence spending will outstrip the expectations of bluechip corporate profits. The declines dragged the Nasdaq composite down by more than two per cent, with memory firms Sandisk and Micron falling more than thirteen per cent.
Multiple forces are pulling the market down at once. The Federal Reserve has signalled that it will not cut interest rates as quickly as Wall Street had hoped, making future profits worth less in today's terms. At the same time, the enormous capital spending of AI giants is starting to alarm investors who want to see clearer returns. The market is asking, in short: when does AI investment start to generate AI profit?
The sharpest losses came in the memory-chip sector. SanDisk fell more than thirteen per cent, and Micron suffered similar damage. Memory chips are essential to data centres — and data centres are essential to AI — so any sign of weakness in this part of the supply chain ripples quickly through the wider technology sector.
Some analysts believe this is a healthy correction after a long bull run. Others worry that it may be the beginning of something more serious: a delayed reckoning with valuations that have, for years, been priced for perfection. Either way, the slide is a reminder that even the most powerful technology cannot suspend the basic laws of finance.
Selloff — period of widespread selling of stocks. Interest rate — cost of borrowing money. Valuation — estimated value of a company. Bluechip — large, well-established company. Bull run — sustained period of rising prices. Reckoning — moment when accounts must be settled.
Why do high interest rates tend to hurt technology stocks more than other sectors? Is the AI investment boom comparable to the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s?
