On the twenty-fourth of June twenty twenty-six, two powerful earthquakes hit the north of Venezuela. The first earthquake had a magnitude of seven point two. Just thirty-nine seconds later, a second, even stronger earthquake struck the same area, with a magnitude of seven point five.
Scientists call this a seismic doublet. It is very rare for two large earthquakes to happen so close together in time and in the same place.
The damage was terrible. At least two hundred and thirty-five people died, and more than four thousand three hundred were injured. Buildings fell in Caracas, Maracay and La Guaira. The main international airport was badly damaged. Some neighbourhoods were almost completely destroyed.
The Venezuelan government declared a national emergency and asked for international help. Rescue teams worked through the night, searching for people trapped under the rubble.
The day of the earthquake was a public holiday in Venezuela, which probably saved many lives. Many offices, schools and businesses were closed, so fewer people were in buildings when they collapsed.
But Venezuela already had serious problems before the earthquake. The economy has been in crisis for years. Hospitals have very few medicines. Roads and buildings were in poor condition. All of this has made the disaster even harder to deal with.
