After four days of talks in Washington, Israel and Lebanon signed a framework agreement on the twenty-seventh of June twenty twenty-six. As part of the deal, Israel agreed to pull its troops back from two areas in the south of Lebanon.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the deal as "the beginning of the beginning" of a road to peace. It was an important moment after many months of conflict between the two countries.
However, not everyone was happy with the news. Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed group, rejected the agreement. Its supporters took to the streets of Beirut on motorcycles. They blocked roads with burning tyres and shouted slogans against the deal. Hezbollah wanted a complete ceasefire and a full withdrawal of Israeli forces, which the agreement does not provide.
The conflict between Israel and Lebanon is part of a larger crisis in the Middle East. This week, the US also struck Iranian military targets after Iran attacked a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The situation in the region remains very unstable.
The deal is a first step, but there is still a long way to go before the region can achieve lasting peace.
