El Niño is a natural climate event that happens in the Pacific Ocean. When the water in the Pacific becomes warmer than usual, the weather all over the world changes. Some places get more rain. Others get much drier. Storms become stronger. Food prices go up.
In June twenty twenty-six, scientists noticed that the water temperature in the Pacific is already very high — higher than it has ever been at this time of year. This could mean that El Niño will be very strong this year. Some scientists are calling it a possible "Super El Niño".
The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, gave a serious warning. He said that El Niño could "pour fuel on the fire" of a planet that is already getting hotter because of climate change. If the Super El Niño develops as scientists fear, twenty twenty-seven could be the hottest year ever recorded.
The effects would be different in different parts of the world. Asia and Australia could face serious droughts. Other regions could have heavy rainfall and flooding. The poorest countries would suffer most, because they have fewer resources to prepare and respond.
Governments around the world need to act now. Scientists have been asking for urgent action on climate change for many years. This new warning about Super El Niño is another reason not to wait.
