From 1963, “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” is one of Bob Dylan’s most loved early songs. On the surface it is a gentle goodbye to a lover, but underneath its calm words there is real sadness and even a little anger.

1 A goodbye that pretends not to care

The singer is leaving at dawn, and he keeps telling both his lover and himself that it does not matter: “don’t think twice, it’s all right”. But the more he repeats it, the more we feel how much it actually hurts.

This gap between the calm words and the real feeling is what makes the song so moving.

2 Sweet and bitter at once

The melody is soft and pretty, almost like a lullaby, which makes the sad, slightly bitter words even more powerful. The singer says he is fine, yet he cannot stop pointing out how the relationship failed.

It is a very human portrait of trying to look strong while walking away from something painful.

3 A song many have sung

Because its feeling is so universal, the song has been recorded by countless other artists. Almost everyone has, at some point, tried to say a calm goodbye while hiding a broken heart.

That is why, more than sixty years later, the song still feels fresh and true.

5 Grammar focus · “Will” for decisions and the future
Grammar

The singer has decided to leave, so this song is a good place to study the future with will.

We use will + the base verb for decisions made at the moment of speaking, for promises and for predictions: I’ll go now. / I’ll never forget you. / You’ll be fine.

The form is easy: will + verb for all subjects, with the short form ’ll. For negatives we use won’t: I won’t stay. Remember: for plans we already made, we usually prefer “going to”. Write one promise and one prediction using “will”.

6 Key vocabulary

To pretend means to act as if something is true when it is not. A lullaby is a gentle song to help a child sleep. To be bitter is to feel hurt and slightly angry.

A relationship is a connection between two people. To hide a feeling means to keep it secret. Universal describes something that everyone can understand or share.
